IPL Hair Removal FAQ
What is an IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and has gained widespread popularity for the many benefits it affords the user. This modern technology aims to remove unwanted hair, slow the aging process by reducing wrinkles and perfect the skin tone by treating blemishes. Multiple uses of IPL also increase collagen production in the skin, leaving you glowing from the inside out! Due to IPL's diverse range of uses and proven results, IPL is a must for anyone wanting to look and feel their best.
IPL devices can be costly, often setting you back at least $500 and sometimes as much as $800, but if you're always making trips to the salon and are after a more permanent solution, then IPL might be a more cost-effective method.
What’s the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?
Don’t confuse IPL with laser hair removal. Laser treatments use a different light source and target a more concentrated area. The laser method is often more powerful. You can use IPL devices at home, but if you want laser hair removal you’ll need to have it performed by a trained professional.
Is IPL hair removal safe?
IPL is considered safe to use, providing the device is from a reliable, trusted brand and instructions are followed as advised. Occasionally, some people may experience side effects such as redness, discomfort, and very rarely blisters or burns. If any irritation occurs, please consult a medical professional.
How often do i need to use it?
We recommend using your handset once a week for the first 12 weeks. After this period use your handset once a month, for 3 months or until satisfied. To maintain hairless smooth skin, use your handset once every 2 to 3 months, or as needed. There is no need to use it more than once a week, as IPL is only effective in the growing phase of your hair cycle.
How to use IPL devices
For IPL hair removal to work effectively, some hair is required to allow the light to target it, therefore it’s best not to wax or epilate ahead of your session. Shaving beforehand is advised as the light can target hair directly in the follicle. If IPL is used on longer hair, it runs the risk of burning the skin. Some models are suitable for use in different areas, such as the upper lip (all the devices in this guide can be used on both body and facial hair).
For best results, regular IPL sessions are required. Each brand advises how often to use their IPL device, and when you can expect to see results. Typically, most brands suggest a 12-week programme followed by top-up sessions as and when needed.
Do I need to shave before using my ipl handset?
Yes, you should shave the desired areas before using your handset. A close to skin shave is best recommended. The goal is for the light energy to reach the hair follicle as quickly as possible, so shaving beforehand is essential to achieve the best results. The hair follicle does need to be intact for IPL to be effective. This means no waxing, plucking, threading, epilating etc.
How long will it take before I start seeing results?
Most customers begin to notice a reduction of hair after just 3-4 treatments, with complete results after 12 treatments. However, results vary from person to person.
Does IPL hurt?
Most IPL users face some discomfort akin to a rubber band being flicked. However, compared to other treatments offered, IPL is much more tolerable and very popular.
Do I need to wear eye protection?
No, it isn't necessary to wear eye protection while using our handset. Our handsets are fitted with a sensor and will not pulse and light unless the entire window is pressed against your skin. That being said you should never try and look directly into the light as it flashes. People with Epilepsy should not use this product as the IPL has a bright flash.
Which areas of the body can I use this on?
You can use your handset on your entire body, including your Brazilian and face (just be sure to not get too close to your eyes)
Is it safe to ipl while pregnant or breast feeding?
Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using our handset as a precaution.
Is it safe to IPL over freckles or moles?
You should not IPL over very dark freckles or moles, however light freckles are fine.
Is it safe to IPL over tattoos?
You should not IPL over tattoos. However, going around tattoos is fine.
Can I use this product before or after tanning?
If you have recently been tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your handset. You should wait 48 hours to tan after using your handset. Artificial tan should not be on your skin while using your handset.
I have pcos. Will ipl be suitable for me?
IPL can definitely be used on hormonal hair growth, and has proven to be quite effective. Most PCOS customers have said this makes the hormonal hair regrowth more manageable as it doesn’t regrow as quickly. It also assists with minimising the appearance of shaver rash as you will not need to shave it as often.
